Robert Hollon Lee III was the perfect start to our little family!
I had a fairly normal pregnancy with Trip but he definitely decided to shake things up when it was time to be born! I went in to be induced, and the nurses kept coming into my room panicking because Trip kept turning and would get wrapped in his cord. This continued until lunch time the next day, so we had an emergency c-section.
Trip was born at lunch time on July 13, 2009, and Robert and I didn't get much time with him for quite a while. Due to all of the anti-nausea medication the nurses gave me during the surgery, my body temperature dropped and they kept me in recovery for over 6 hours under heaters.
When I was cleared to head to a room, Trip was wheeled in, and the doctor told us that they needed to move him to the NICU to monitor his breathing since he had stopped breathing in the nursery. He spent a few days in the NICU while I was recovering, and we were able to visit several times a day. Trip was cleared to come stay in my room on our last night in the hospital, and exhausted, we finally headed home the next day as a family of 3!
Other than 2 rounds of stitches, Trip has never had another major health issue, and we are so happy for that. With a 6 foot papa and 6' 5" great-grandfather, this kid quickly became one of the biggest kids in daycare. The teachers all called him "Bam Bam" from The Flintstones. He ate everything on his plate and was known to help out his neighbors with their lunches!
Trip has always been into dinosaurs and shoes! He genuinely believed that Ari was going to be a baby dinosaur when she was born. There may be some truth to that!
At 2.5, he became a big brother, and has lived the past 5 years with a constant shadow!
He loves to be outside and can tell you the name of just about every type of fish.
He's a good sport and goes with the flow when dragged on shopping trips or mom's history group outings.
He found a passion for swimming when we moved to our new neighborhood.
And although he's a great swimmer, he never takes himself too seriously!
Trip's best smiles are his big toothy ones!
He cleans up quite well, and I'll often find him with a belt on his shorts or jeans. You'd think his dog died the day he stained his favorite button down and it had to be thrown out!
He loves science and animals. Doodle knows a lot about a lot! He used to want to be a paleontologist but has been thinking about moving into marine biology a lot more lately.
When Trip finds a book that he's interested in, that book goes everywhere with the kid!
And like his mom, he's kind of a "Go big or go home" kind of person and is very into the details of a project, costume, or dish.
Trip has become very interested in shooting and is very focused when he goes to the range. He is planning to join the 4H club this fall to learn some more skills and to start competing.
He is a great friend, and I think I am most proud of Trip for the encouragement he gives to his friends. I've noticed him telling his buddies that they did a great job in a swim race or bowling, and it makes me super proud.
Doodle is quite a fitting nickname for Trip as he has turned into an award-winning artist! I'm lucky to have an in-house artist and can commission paintings as needed to decorate the home!
Trip is super sweet with a little bit of crazy, a big helper, and a great role model.
He is patient (most of the time) and a great companion!
I know that as much as Robert and I love Trip, his sister loves him just as much.
I'm so grateful to call you mine, Doodle! I hope you have the happiest of birthdays! Love you lots, and rock on!
